POWER ELECTRONICS

Power Electronics

Power Electronics is an area of study and specialization that aims at applying the speed and other desirable properties of Electronics and Electronic devices in Power, ie. In Electrical Power Systems Engineering Circuits, devices and Machines.

There are a good number of Power Electronics components and devices such as; Power Diodes, Power Transistors, Diacs, Triacs, MOSFET, Thyristors etc.

Over the years, it has been found out that Thyristors are reliable Power Electronic devices which are fast and are able to withstand high voltages and currents.

In this study, the Thyristor shall be investigated with a view of determining its characteristics and how it can be applied in practice to realize desirable  objectives as well as other Power Electronics Components and Circuits and Devices.

Areas of Interest.

Types of Converters

Converters are Power Semiconductor Systems used for rectifying , inverting, or otherwise modulating the Power output of an AC or DC energysource.

    1. What its stability studies? Its a study that enables one to know if a system will retain synchronism after a perturbation.
    2. Outline and explain types of stability studies.
Steady state stability study: here the power system its assumed to be normal but it is not for the purpose of normal studies.
Dynamic stability study: here the generators under study are undergoing gradual changes in their operating conditions
Transient stability study: here the power system under study its undergoing a major disturbances. Like... Transmission system fault, sudden load changes, loss of generating units, line switching. Transient stability studies its subdivided into two.
    (1) first swing stability: it considers the first second after which system fault occurred. Its usually based on a reasonable simple generator model without representation of control system.
    (2) multiswing stability: it extends over a longer period of time and therefore must consider effects of generator control system which affects the extended time period.
    3. What it's load flow analysis? Its the study of the power system with the view of knowing the voltages at the various buses using system configuration, loading at each bus, system topology and system parameters.
